Some big benefits can be achieved by integrating Dynamics NAV & 365 Business Central with various internal or external systems. Integrations typically saves a lot of manual data entry which in turn reduces data errors and provides more timely information in the ERP system. It could be that you integrate with your bank system to send or upload payment files, you could have a website where customers are placing orders that should be created in Dynamics NAV & 365 Business Central, it could be a shipping software that should retrieve address information from Dynamics NAV & 365 Business Central, or a POS system that should send transactions into Dynamics NAV & 365 Business Central, etc.. There are almost as many types of integrations as there are types of industries.

Years ago the most common way of integrating with Dynamics NAV was to setup a file exchange where the different systems where exchanging data by creating and reading files in shared folders. Various ADO and ODBC connections where also used to connect and read data from external databases. Those methods are still available but recently there have been a move towards using web service based APIs instead. This provides a much more standardized and flexible interface solutions and Microsoft have made it very simple to expose Dynamics NAV & 365 Business Central data and business logic through native NAV & 365 Business Central web services.

Interfaces can be programmed to be fully automatic where the functionality absorbs and sometimes also recovers from errors without any user interactions or they can be designed to simply be user triggered import and export routines.
